Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama

David Walter of Orange Beach purchased the cargo ship Yokamu in Miami. It was towed
from there across the gulf to Mobile Bay then down the canal to Orange Beach passing
by Gulf Shores Alabama. Built 40 years ago in Holland.  The 270 x 39 foot ship will be sunk
as an artificial reef after being cleaned and prepared.

Both Florida and Alabama are interested in getting it. The total cost of purchasing, towing, cleaning and sinking is $500,000. The Alabama Department of Conservation has pledged $100,000 toward the purchase. There are no whole sunken ships off the coast of Alabama so there is a lot of interest in keeping the Yokamu here.

We will have more details when available.
